The Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer on Friday issued guidelines and developments focusing on AI use, political advertisements, and voter services accessibility in relation to the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections.
Tightening the norms for AI-generated content and to tackle deepfakes and synthetic media, the EC has mandated that any AI-generated or digitally altered content must be clearly labeled, and misleading content that impersonates individuals is prohibited.
“All AI-generated or digitally altered content must carry a clear and prominent label such as “AI Generated”, “Digitally Enhanced”, or “Synthetic Content”, covering at least 10 per cent of the display area or initial 10 per cent duration for audio content,” the guideline said. Such content must be removed within 3 hours of detection / reporting, it added.
Similarly, to improve urban voter turnout, the EC said it has initiated polling facilities within high-rise residential complexes and group housing societies. “14 number of polling stations have been established in such locations during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026,” it said, without naming the 14 such locations.
The EC also said that all political advertisements on electronic and social media must be approved by the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) at the State or District level.
Recognized parties must apply at least 3 days in advance, while others must apply 7 days prior, the Commission added, noting that the aim is to prevent misuse of media and paid news.
