Indian unmanned systems company BonV Aero has entered into a strategic alliance with NASDAQ-listed ParaZero Technologies to offer ‘DefendAir’, a hard-kill counter-drone system which primarily functions as a drone catcher.

‘DefendAir’, which works through a kinetic approach, is in the trial stage and will need at least another three months to collect field efficacy data on countering aerial and ground threats to ensure that it conforms to the requirements of the armed forces, Satyabrata Satapathy, co-founder and chief executive officer of BonV Aero, told BusinessLine.

The system has the capability to throw five nets in a radius of 50 metres to intercept and neutralise hostile drones mid-flight without touching the electromagnetic spectrum, making it deployable in sensitive zones without disrupting communications or navigation systems, Satapathy stated.

DefendAir can capture swarm drones ranging in size from 30-40 centimetres to 5 metres, though the capacity can be enhanced with bigger nets for larger UAVs, he explained.

BonV Aero has been working with Israeli ParaZero Technologies for the last five years to get safety solutions and the partnership for co-production gives the Indian company exclusive rights to deploy the system in the indigenous market now and subsequently manufacture it locally, the company said.

The move comes as drone incursions along land borders, UAV-enabled smuggling across coastal zones, and the growing use of first-person-view platforms in conflict theatres have laid bare gaps in existing counter-drone measures.

For now, radio-frequency jamming is the primary line of defence. But autonomous and encrypted drones do not rely on external signals, which blunts the effectiveness of such systems considerably.

Regulatory constraints add another layer of difficulty as jammers cannot be used near airports, nuclear facilities, or other critical infrastructure where uninterrupted spectrum access is non-negotiable.

“The threat landscape has changed, and India’s response capability must adapt accordingly. DefendAir is designed to operate in conditions where conventional countermeasures fall short,” observed Satapathy.

Ariel Alon, chief executive of ParaZero Technologies, said: “The partnership opens a route to integrate field-tested systems into India’s security framework. The system is built for border security, protection of strategic assets, convoy movement, and urban operations.”

The alliance also covers DropAir, a platform designed for autonomous delivery in high-altitude and remote terrain.
