Bengaluru-based generative AI (GenAI) start-up NeuroPixel AI has shut down its service operations after five years, with its CEO and co-founder, Arvind Venugopal Nair, citing an inability to compete with rapidly advancing image-generation models from large technology firms.

In a LinkedIn post on Thursday, Nair said, “While we got the broader thesis right (Gen-AI for Fashion) way back in 2021, we got massively outgunned overnight sometime in late 2025. By that point, we had spent nearly 4 years building deep IP with a small team, thinking that our competition would be other start-ups. However, our product didn’t hold up against the capabilities of powerful image generation models like NanoBanana Pro by Google.”

Founded in 2020, NeuroPixel.AI built proprietary technology with a small team for nearly four years, expecting competition primarily from other startups. However, the emergence of high-performance, large-scale image models like NanoBanana Pro altered the market dynamics, reducing the relative advantage of smaller players.

According to data from Tracxn, the company had raised $1.28 million across four equity funding rounds and was last valued at $5.81 million in September 2022. Its backers include Anicut Capital, Inflection Point Ventures, Flipkart Ventures, Dexter Ventures, Huddle Ventures, and ISB I-Venture.

We do still have a unique tech stack that is comparable to Google’s Nanobanana Pro in terms of output quality, and at a fraction of the cost, which we are in discussions to monetise, but for all practical purposes we are shuttering service operations.

Nair said the startup had only a brief window of around six months where its proprietary technology offered an edge. As the ecosystem evolved, the game increasingly depended less on core intellectual property (IP) and more on distribution strategies built on top of large foundational models.

The company’s financial position was further strained after its largest client went under, leaving over six months of dues unpaid.

Despite shutting down its services, NeuroPixel AI is exploring options to monetise its underlying technology stack, which Nair claimed delivers output quality comparable to leading models at a fraction of the cost.
