The fallout from the ongoing US-Israel and Iran conflict in the middle-east is hitting India’s energy-intensive industries, with Borosil Ltd on Wednesday reporting LPG shortages that have forced a temporary suspension of its borosilicate glass furnace and reduced capacity at its opal glass units at Jaipur in Rajasthan.
The disruption follows a force majeure notice from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in India.
According to a regulatory filing, the company stated, “While production at the Borosilicate Glass Furnace has been temporarily suspended, the Opal Glass Furnaces have been operating at lower capacities. We are actively coordinating with OMCs and government authorities to secure LPG supply and ensure continuity of production to the extent feasible.”
Borosil produces borosilicate glass, widely used for laboratory glassware, cookware, and pharmaceutical containers due to its heat resistance and chemical stability, while opal glass finds applications in decorative items, lighting fixtures, and tableware.
The LPG shortage, driven by a force majeure situation declared by OMCs is forcing manufacturers to scale back operations, highlighting the vulnerability of energy-intensive sectors to global supply shocks. “We are evaluating the impact arising from the ongoing disruption in the supply of LPG,” the company added.
