Gangtok, March 1: Three persons were killed after a tipper truck plunged nearly 300 feet off the road at Tikzeck Veer in West Sikkim’s Gyalshing district late Saturday night, police said.
The accident occurred around 11 pm when the truck (registration number SK 02D 1173) was travelling from Dentam to Gyalshing carrying an aggregate load. Upon reaching Tikzeck Veer, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and tumbled into a steep gorge below.
The deceased have been identified as Pradeep Chettri (40), a driver-cum-owner and resident of Salley in Gyalshing, Nagendra Gurung (18) of Lingchom, and Onchen Bhutia (20) of Sindrabong, Darap, all in West Sikkim.
All three sustained grievous injuries in the crash and were rescued by the night duty police team. They were rushed to the District Hospital in Gyalshing, where doctors declared them dead despite efforts to save them.
Police have preserved the bodies at the hospital mortuary. Inquest proceedings are scheduled to be conducted on Sunday morning.
An investigation has been launched to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
