Google Home is finally cleaning up its act ahead of wider Gemini rollout

Google is rolling out a major update to its Home platform, and this one feels different. It seems Google is finally ready to address some of the biggest complaints users have had with the platform in recent years. Instead of flashy new features, the company is rolling out fixes for slow responses, inconsistent accuracy, and other issues users with Gemini access have been highlighting for some time.

Faster responses

If you often ask your Gemini-powered smart speaker to turn on the lights and wait longer than you should, this update is for you.

Google’s changelog for the latest update notes that common smart home commands like “Turn on the lights” will now be up to 40% faster. That’s a noticeable improvement for actions people use dozens of times a day, and a clear sign Google has been listening to frustrated users.

Google is also streamlining responses across core features like alarms, timers, lists, and calendars. Instead of a full sentence, you’ll get short confirmations like “Alarm set for 9 AM” when you make these requests. It’s a small tweak, but one that could make interactions feel much more natural and less repetitive.

Improved accuracy

Google is also improving how Home handles local information and basic commands. Gemini can now better detect regional preferences, such as weather units, and deliver more relevant local news.

Translation mode is also getting a boost, with faster response times and support for 30 languages. This is particularly useful for households that rely on Google Home for real-time interpretation.

Moreover, Google is also improving basic features like Timers and alarms. You can now:

• Set alarms or timers based on Gemini’s knowledge about the world: For example, you can say, “Set an alarm for the start of (Team A vs Team B) match.”
• Ask for the initial timer set time in addition to how much time remains: For example, you can ask, “What was the original time of my timer and how much time is left?”
• Perform multiple alarm & timer commands in a single interaction: For example, say: “Cancel my timer then set a new one.”

Google has also fixed how you set recurring alarms and timers. You can now say things like “Wake me up on weekdays at 7 AM,” and it should just work. Snoozing alarms is also getting better, and you’ll now be able to sleep in a little more by saying things like, “Snooze until 10 AM.”

These are the kinds of features users have been asking for some time now, and they should really make Google Home feel less rigid and more conversational.

More capable automations

Google is also expanding automation options inside the Home app. New triggers and actions include things like detecting oven activity or triggering lighting effects such as wake, sleep, or pulse modes.

While these are still limited to the automation editor for now, Google says they’ll eventually tie into its Gemini-powered tools like “Help me create.”

Expanding Gemini for Home globally

Finally, Google is expanding access to its newer Gemini-powered Home features, including Ask Home, Home Brief, Help me create, and Gemini for Home camera features. Early access is expanding to several new countries across Europe, Asia, and beyond, alongside broader language support, including Canadian French.
