
Double Commonwealth Games medallist Mirabai Chanu will once again captain the Indian weightlifting contingent at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow that begins from July 23. Mirabai currently boasts of three Commonwealth Games medals (two gold and one silver) in her kitty. She is set to participate in the women’s 48kg event. Apart from her, the other members of the Indian contingent include Manipuri lifter Bindyarani Devi (58kg) and Harjinder Kaur of Punjab (69kg). They bagged silver medals each in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
The Indian contingent in the men’s events will be led by Lovepreet Singh (+110kg), who won a bronze medal in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. His team mates include Rishikant Singh (60kg), Ajay Babu (79kg) and Dilbag Singh (94kg), who are participating for the first time at the Commonwealth Games level. The weightlifting events will take place from July 26 to July 30.
India has topped the weightlifting medal tally at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games. The country won nine medals, including five golds, at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and secured 10 medals, including three golds, at the 2022 Birmingham Games. The Indian weightlifting team is as follows:
- Women’s team: Mirabai Chanu (48 kg), Gyaneshwari Yadav (53 kg), Bindyarani Devi (58 kg), Harjinder Kaur (69 kg), Sanjana (77 kg), Martina Devi (+86 kg).
- Men’s team: Rishikant Singh (60 kg), M. Raja (65 kg), Ajay Babu (79 kg), Dilbag Singh (94 kg), Lovepreet Singh (+110 kg).
