Oil prices rose as the US and Iran made divergent remarks about efforts to put an end to the confrontation that has closed the Strait of Hormuz, cut off large amounts of petroleum output, and heightened worries about a worldwide energy crisis.

West Texas Intermediate was close to $91, while Brent surpassed $103 a barrel after falling more than 2% on Wednesday.
