Guwahati, March 29: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Sunday expelled 15 party members for six years, citing serious violations of party discipline and alleged anti-party activities, in a move that comes days before the Assembly elections.

The decision was approved by state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi at a critical juncture in the election cycle.

In an official statement, the party named the expelled members along with their constituencies, though it did not elaborate on the specific charges against each individual.

Those expelled include Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah (Titabor), Abul Miah (Gauripur), Aftadur Ali Khan (Chenga), Tapan Das (Udharbond), Sandip Das (Katigorah), and Jahurul Islam Barbhuiya (Borkhola).

The list also features Aziz Ahmed Khan (Karimganj South), Anup Kumar Das (Ram Krishna Nagar), Labaniya Boro (Boko-Chaygaon), Nitul Das (Dimoria), Girindra Kumar Bhuyan (Rangapara), Pallabi Saikia (Tezpur), Mukut Das (Raha), Biju Dowarah (Khowang), and Aynul Hoque (Dalgaon).

The expulsions take immediate effect and will remain in force for six years, the party said.

The disciplinary action comes as Assam prepares for single-phase polling on April 9, with results scheduled to be declared on May 4, placing the move squarely in the high-stakes run-up to the elections.
