Shillong, Apr 2: The state government is on track to implement the new pay structure for over 23,000 SSA and adhoc school teachers from May 1, with verification of personnel almost complete.
“We are sure that within a few days, we will be able to complete it and on May 1, we will be able to pay the new salary,” Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said after chairing a four-hour review meeting on Thursday.
The cabinet had approved the pay hike under Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s leadership.
Rymbui acknowledged that while the government has upgraded several secondary schools to higher secondary schools and added new streams, the appointment of teachers remains a challenge.
“As of now, we are still appointing on contract basis,” he said.
Rymbui stated that the government is working to address this issue and aims to have permanent teachers in place within the next few months.
“We are discussing how to see that in the next few months the post and the teachers should be in place,” he added.
Issues discussed at the meeting included part-time college teachers’ salaries, infrastructure for new colleges at Mawphlang, Patharkhmah, and Ronjeng, and university matters.
