India’s SaaS startups are increasingly tapping technology leaders from outside the sector, signalling a sharp shift in how companies build engineering leadership as they scale, according to a study by the executive search firm Longhouse.

Nearly 60 per cent of chief technology officers (CTOs) in SaaS firms have transitioned from non-SaaS backgrounds, with enterprise technology emerging as the largest feeder segment, the report found.

This trend cuts across funding stages, reflecting a broader shift in the role—from pure-play technologists to cross-functional business leaders.

The study, which analysed 60 CTOs across startups from seed to late-stage, highlights that the CTO mandate is evolving rapidly as companies mature.

While early-stage firms accommodate diverse academic and professional backgrounds, late-stage companies show a stronger preference for deep computer science expertise and prior experience in scaling complex systems.

“What we are seeing is a redefinition of the CTO role itself,” said Anshuman Das, CEO and founder of Longhouse. “The CTO is no longer just the architect of the product; they are increasingly the architect of scale.”

The data underscores this transition. At early stages, only 40 per cent of CTOs have a computer science background, compared with nearly 60 per cent in Series D and beyond. Simultaneously, full-stack expertise remains the most common technical foundation across all stages, while niche roles such as research or front-end engineering decline in relevance as firms grow.

The study also points to a strong founder bias in the role. About 55 per cent of CTOs are founders or co-founders, and among those with prior entrepreneurial experience, nearly two-thirds go on to become co-founder CTOs again.

Even among hired CTOs, over half are first-timers stepping into the role after rising through engineering ranks.

Another notable trend is the growing emphasis on intellectual property and global exposure. One in three CTOs holds patents, and a majority of these leaders bring international experience, particularly from the US, indicating the premium placed on innovation-led leadership.

Importantly, the role is no longer confined to engineering. Over 90 per cent of non-founder CTOs have experience across functions such as product, strategy, and customer experience, reflecting the need for broader business alignment.

Taken together, the findings suggest that as India’s SaaS ecosystem matures, companies are prioritising adaptability, cross-domain expertise, and global exposure over traditional sector pedigree—reshaping the leadership playbook for one of the country’s fastest-growing tech segments.
