Atari has acquired emulation specialist Implicit Conversions for an undisclosed fee.
The deal includes both the studio and its proprietary technology, Syrup, which is billed as an advanced emulation engine capable of bringing 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit games to modern consoles.
Implicit Conversions has brought more than 100 classic games to contemporary hardware such as The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S. That catalog includes titles such as Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Rayman, and Fear Effect.
Atari chairman and CEO Wade Rosen said the move will cement the company’s leadership position within the retro market.
“Implicit Conversions’ ability to work with 32-bit era games using their proprietary Syrup engine complements our existing expertise with 8 and 16-bit era games,” said Rosen in a press release.
“Alongside the Bakesale Engine (Digital Eclipse) and the Kex Engine (Nightdive), we now have an enviable suite of proprietary tools, and more engineering talent that will enable us to continue to expand our capabilities across our own catalog as well as the back catalogs of our IP partners.”
Implicit Conversions co-founder Robin Lavallée said the acquisition will enable both companies to champion preservation.
“Implicit Conversions, Atari and their amazing studios have a shared passion for retro games, and a shared belief that accessibility is the cornerstone of preservation,” added Lavallée. “We look forward to sharing our expertise and introducing even more important classic titles to new audiences.”
Atari has made a number of significant acquisitions in recent years—nabbing the rights to franchises such as Surgeon Simulator, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, and the Intellivision brand and catalog.
It also purchased preservation and restoration studio Digital Eclipse in a deal worth up to $20 million in 2023. One year later, the company revived the Infogrames publishing label and told Game Developer it wants to become the ultimate preservationist publisher.
