Shillong, Apr 27: A high-level delegation from KfW Development Bank has reviewed on-ground interventions under Meghalaya’s catchment protection and sustainable land management projects, while inaugurating key infrastructure aimed at boosting farmer incomes and reducing post-harvest losses.

The KfW mission team conducted field inspections last week across villages in the Umiew catchment, including Mawrashe, Nongthymmai Pdeng, Demthring, Kyndong Nongkyntir, and Pomkaniew. The visit assessed activities such as mushroom cultivation, water reservoirs, spring chambers, nurseries, irrigation structures, and plantation efforts.

Senior officials, including Carolin Gassner, Director (South Asia), and Frank Bohnet, Head of Operations (Asia), led the delegation. The team was joined by state officials and project representatives under the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA) and MegARISE.

Officials commended the quality of implementation, highlighting strong community leadership and active participation of women in livelihood initiatives.

As part of the visit, the delegation inaugurated a Collective Marketing Centre (CMC) at Mawlyndiar village in East Khasi Hills under the Sustainable Land Management (SLM) project. The facility is expected to help farmers store produce, reduce spoilage, and improve market access.

The mission also reviewed operations at the Umdihar PRIME Hub, which processes and exports pineapple and ginger products, including frozen pineapple for international markets.

Another storage facility was inaugurated at Umwang Pyllun IVCS, where farmers are currently engaged in bay leaf, ginger, and pineapple cultivation, with plans to expand into turmeric and black pepper.

The visit comes ahead of the proposed loan phase of the SLM project, with KfW officials assessing readiness and impact of ongoing interventions across Meghalaya’s rural landscape.
