Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Saturday appointed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay as the Chief Minister of the state and invited him to form the government.

According to an official release from Lok Bhavan, Vijay will take oath on Sunday, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled to be held at 10 am at Chennai’s Nehru Stadium.

The development came after Vijay met Governor Arlekar and submitted letters of support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), both of which have two MLAs each in the Assembly.

The governor held discussions with Vijay for nearly an hour regarding the support extended to the TVK-led alliance before taking a decision on government formation, news agency PTI reported citing sources.

“In exercise of the powers conferred under the Constitution of India, the Governor has appointed Thiru C Joseph Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and invited him to form the ministry,” the Lok Bhavan release said.

The governor also directed Vijay to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly on or before May 13.

Vijay was accompanied during the meeting by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai and leaders from supporting parties, including CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam.

With the backing of the VCK and IUML, which have two MLAs each, the TVK-led combine’s strength has now risen to 120 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.
