The main aim in doing this will be to enhance the AI activities of the firm.
According to a Reuters report, Facebook’s parent company, Meta, is planning to lay off 10% of its workforce on Wednesday. Further significant reductions are expected by the end of this year.
According to a memo seen by Reuters, Meta’s Chief People Officer, Janelle Gal, indicated that about 7,000 employees will shift their responsibilities to various projects related to AI. Additionally, some managerial positions will be downsized, while some leaders will make some organizational changes.
The memo stated that, as organizational leadership worked on these changes, many teams incorporated AI-native design principles into their new structures. “We have now reached a stage where many organizations can operate with a more flat structure, creating smaller pod and cohort teams that can work faster and with greater accountability.” A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the plan.
These changes are part of Meta’s broader restructuring plan this year. The company is increasing investment in AI to bring AI agents to the center of its products as well as internal operations.

According to the report, the combined layoffs and transfers could impact approximately 20 percent of Meta’s workforce. The company has also closed 6,000 open job roles as part of this process. Meta had approximately 77,986 employees by March 2026.
Employee discontent is also growing within Meta regarding these changes. Many employees have protested by putting up posters in the office, while employees have also openly expressed their displeasure on the company’s internal platform, Workplace. According to reports, more than 1,000 employees have signed a petition protesting the company’s use of mouse-tracking software. Employees allege that this technology is teaching AI models how to use computers in the same way humans do.
Meta is not the only company restructuring due to AI. This year, several major US tech companies have reduced their workforce due to AI automation.
