SHILLONG, May 31: Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse on Sunday visited NorthEast United FC and praised the club’s grassroots scouting and player development model, saying India’s football future depends on identifying talent early and providing structured pathways for growth.

During her visit, Khadse interacted with the club’s management, coaching staff and young footballers, while reviewing its long-term plans for nurturing football talent, especially from the Northeast.

The minister was briefed on the club’s nationwide scouting initiative led by Technical Director and Reserve Team Head Coach Naushad Moosa, under which coaches travelled across different parts of the country to identify promising young footballers through local networks, AIFF youth competitions and youth national team monitoring.

As part of the process, nearly 60 young footballers were brought to Guwahati for final selection trials. The selected players are expected to strengthen the club’s Under-18 and Reserve Team setup, forming part of a long-term athlete development pipeline.

Initiatives that combine grassroots scouting, athlete development and long-term planning are critical for strengthening India’s football ecosystem,” Khadse said.

She also highlighted the Northeast’s contribution to Indian football, noting that the region has consistently produced top footballing talent. According to the minister, sustained investments in coaching, infrastructure and scientific athlete development can further unlock the region’s sporting potential.
