Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk’s diabetes drug Ozempic and weight-loss drug Wegovy
Alkem Laboratories has brought in semaglutide in single-shot pre-filled syringes, in multiple dose strengths, starting at ₹350, the company said.
The company had received the regulatory Drugs Controller General of India’s approval for the manufacture and marketing of semaglutide pre-filled syringes for type-2 diabetes and obesity, the company said. The one shot pre-filled syringe format expands treatment options for patients and lowers entry barriers by making it affordable, it added.
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk’s diabetes drug Ozempic and weight-loss drug Wegovy. A host of generic drugmakers with their less expensive versions of the product entered the market after a patent on semaglutide expired, late in March this year.
Alkem said, in March 2026, that it too had launched semaglutide in pre-filled disposable and reusable injection pens. The company has also received regulatory approval for semaglutide vials, which will be launched soon, it added.
Dr Vikas Gupta, Alkem’s outgoing Chief Executive Officer, said, “Semaglutide has the potential to change how we manage metabolic disorders. In India, where we are seeing a continuous rise in disease burden, offering multiple, practical drug delivery formats is an important step in helping more patients start and stay on the therapy.”
Several local drugmakers including Sun Pharma, Torrent Pharma, Zydus and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, for example, are in the fray.
