Spell check can be a political candidate’s best friend, but it’s a lesson that Florida gubernatorial candidate Rep. Byron Donalds apparently hasn’t learned.
On Saturday, the three-term Republican congressman announced a “Read to Succeed” plan to increase literacy in the Sunshine State.
“When children learn to read by third grade, you’ve opened every door ahead of them. When they fall behind, those doors of opportunity are closed,” Donalds said during a speech announcing the plan, per Florida Politics. “Florida is choosing to open doors for every child, in every classroom, in every county.”
Donalds paired the announcement with a sign, but apparently nobody in the campaign noticed that the word “achievability” was misspelled as “achieveability.”
The spelling error didn’t go unnoticed. Donalds’ opponent in the Florida primary, James Fishback, made hay with the unforced spelling error.
Others joined in on the mockery.
One person noticed that Achieveability is the name of a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that helps low-income, single-parent and homeless families “break the generational cycle of poverty,” and posited that Donalds’ sign was specifically referring to that group. Another user suggested that “AchieveAbility” was a promotional slogan.
HuffPost reached out to both the Philadelphia organization and Donalds’ campaign, but calls were not immediately returned.
