Balrampur Chini Mills expects its PLA vertical, which will commission India’s first industrial-scale bio-based Polylactic Acid manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh in October this year, to have an annual revenue potential of around ₹2,000 crore at full capacity.
The manufacturing facility at Uttar Pradesh’s Kumbhi, with an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes per annum, is expected to reach full capacity in six months after commissioning.
“We envisage a peak revenue potential of ₹2,000 crore, and we have given guidance at that revenue potential of around 35 per cent EBITDA,” Balrampur Chini Mills Executive Director Avantika Saraogi told businessline.
The Kolkata-headquartered company, one of the largest integrated sugar manufacturing companies in India, is setting up the PLA (Polylactic Acid) plant with a gross capital expenditure of around ₹2,850 crore. The foundation stone laying ceremony of the facility at Kumbhi had taken place in February last year.
The PLA vertical, Balrampur Bioyug, has secured its first government order from the Lucknow Cantonment Board (LCB), marking a significant milestone for the country’s emerging bio-based materials ecosystem.
Lucknow Cantonment Board is a statutory body functioning under the administrative control of the Director General of Defence Estates, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, and is located within the Lucknow Cantonment area. Its order includes compostable garbage bags, PLA bottles, 3D-printed PLA compostable pens, and PLA folders — all manufactured from renewable, bio-based Polylactic Acid, a 100 per cent compostable material with a low carbon footprint that leaves no microplastics behind.
Amid rising concerns around single-use plastics and micro plastic contamination in the environment, food chain and even human bodies, this procurement signals a clear shift from fossil-based materials to bio-based alternatives within institutional systems, Balrampur Chini Mills said in a stock exchange filing on Monday.
“We are talking to many institutions — State governments and brands — on what can be done in terms of usage, quantity and cost. We are talking to more than 150 government and private sector institutions. We are talking to the institutions mainly for packaging, whether it is rigid or flexible packaging,” Saraogi said.
PLA finds a wide range of applications, especially as an alternative to the banned Single Use Plastic (SUP) items such as bottles, carry bags, food trays, cups, straws and disposable cutlery, among others.
