As artificial intelligence accelerates software development at an unprecedented pace, it is also quietly widening the attack surface for cybercriminals. And that is precisely the opportunity that Chainguard, a US-based cybersecurity startup valued at $3.5 billion, is betting on, with India now emerging as one of its key markets globally.

The cybersecurity startup plans to expand its India workforce, with hiring expected across engineering, product development and go-to-market functions.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Dan Lorenc, CEO and co-founder of Chainguard, said the company currently employs around 20 people in India across engineering, operations and partnerships, and intends to increase headcount as it expands in the country.

“We’ll be hiring more people,” Lorenc said, adding that while the company continuously evaluates hiring needs alongside AI-driven automation, India remains an important talent market.

The company said its India engineering teams already work on core product development, with technologies built here deployed globally.

Besides engineering, Chainguard is also strengthening its sales, pre-sales, solution architecture and partner-facing teams as it pursues a partner-led expansion strategy.

Global Vice President of Partnerships Naveen Sharma told CNBC-TV18 that India will continue to be a major investment destination for the company because of its deep engineering talent, thriving open-source ecosystem and rapidly growing AI adoption.

“As we expand in the region, our India headcount and presence will continue to grow alongside our commercial ambitions,” Sharma said.

India’s growing network of more than 1,700 Global Capability Centres (GCCs) has emerged as a key opportunity for Chainguard, as multinational companies increasingly build AI infrastructure and software engineering capabilities from the country.

The company is partnering with leading system integrators including TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, LTIMindtree and Persistent, while also working with AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure to integrate its software security platform into enterprise developer workflows.

Chainguard counts OpenAI, Canva and Cloudera among its global customers, while its Indian customer base includes Slice Bank, Amagi and Fyno.

The expansion comes months after Chainguard raised growth capital that took its total funding to $892 million at a valuation of $3.5 billion.

The company, however, declined to comment on future fundraising plans or a potential IPO timeline.

“Our priority right now is scaling responsibly and continuing to earn our customers’ trust. We think that long-term success will naturally create a range of options for us down the road,” Sharma said.

On revenue, Chainguard said its business is approximately 80% US-driven, with around 10% from Europe and the remaining 10% from the rest of the world — a split the company is actively working to change through its Latin America and Asia Pacific expansion. The company declined to share India-specific revenue targets or contribution figures.

Separately, Chainguard this week launched Athena, an industry coalition designed to strengthen open-source software security against AI-driven cyber threats by enabling member organisations to identify vulnerabilities and develop patches before flaws become publicly exploitable.
