Low-Cost Shopping Platform

By Voghion

Similar to most individuals who are attempting to remain cost-effective, I have now been more mindful of my money usage on the internet. As the cost of living increases, even the minor things that one buys no longer seem minor as they did in the past. Most recently, I continued reading about a low-cost shopping platform known as Voghion. The interviews were by no means passionate or judgemental, but frequent enough to get my attention.

Therefore, I did not want to make a decision based on reviews or assumptions, and I chose to experiment with it. I treated it as a scientific experiment, and not as a shopping spree. The principle was quite straightforward: to determine whether exceptionally low prices do make sense as realistic value.

First of all, I navigated the platform via Voghion based on category, pricing trends and the way the products were displayed. I did not make impulse buying choices but attempted to think in terms of a person with a small budget. Later on, I went back to Voghion and made a list of shortlisted items to ensure that the bricoleur wasn’t affecting me solely with first-time curiosity.

Defining the Budget Before Spending.

I put a strict budget before I put anything in my cart. This was not just about restricting expenditure, this was about discipline. The low costs can easily compromise someone to defend the unwarranted purchases so I did not want to fall into that trap.

My budget was divided into three realistic groups:

  • Basic household items
  • One or two cheap garments items.
  • One item that is not definite to measure risk tolerance.

This model also allowed me to consider not only the quality of the products, but also whether the platform will stimulate conscious consumption or impulsive buying.

Initial Observations: Low Prices, Unclear Trade-Offs

The initial thing which was conspicuous was the pricing. Most products were very inexpensive compared to what I normally see in the market. Low prices do not necessarily entail good value but rather tend to come at trade-offs that are not always apparent.

Some patterns I noticed:

  • Descriptions that were given on products lacked detail.
  • Pictures appeared smooth yet generic.
  • There were atypically high differences in prices of similar items.

This brought some kind of uncertainty. It was not evident that I was getting good deals or other lower quality alternatives. Uncertainty has a negative value-generating effect financially, though the price may be low.

Checkout Experience and Undercover Costs

The process of the checkout was not difficult as such. No unpleasant surprises were introduced at the last point, which is generally a cause of concern on a new platform.

Nevertheless, the timelines of delivery were above average. That is not necessarily an issue, and it does impact the overall value equation. When it requires a much longer time to arrive, then it will be less practical with time-sensitive needs.

Value is not always related to money in a financial perspective but also time and reliability.

Delivery and Product Reality

Upon the receipt of the items, I rated them on the level of their similarity with the expectation.

I paid attention to three major aspects:

  • Functionality
  • Material or build quality
  • Listing compared to accuracy.
  • What I Found

1. Basic Items

These were largely acceptable. They performed their appropriate duty, but there was nothing very permanent or remarkable about them. They were more of short term remedies in place of permanent purchases.

2. Clothing

This type was not so consistent. Materials and sizing were not necessarily as expected. There were those that could be used and others not. This revealed one of the drawbacks of cheap fashion, which is the lack of predictability.

3. Risk Purchase

My purchase was a mediocre at best item that I purchased as a kind of experiment. It was not a total waste, but it was not a clever purchase at that.

Did I Actually Save Money?

Yes, at first, I spent less than I usually do. Saving money is not merely about the payment of a lower price. It has to do with whether the purchase is effective or not.

The result was evaluated as follows by me:

  • I stayed within budget
  • The majority of the items were consumable, but not resistant.
  • Quality was not as uniform as it should have been.
  • The time taken in delivery decreased the overall convenience.

Technically I was saving money in the short term but the long-term of it is doubtful. The savings might not be sustainable in the long run in case things have to be replaced earlier.

The Behavioral Side of Cheap Shopping

The more interesting lesson derived during this experiment was not actually about the products but it was all about my own conduct.

It was now able to easily justify purchases which I would not have made because of low prices. It is in this regard that the platforms may turn out to be economically complicated. Although everything might be cheap, what is needed can be spent very fast unless one controls his spending.

This coincides with overall trends of consumers. The findings of the research conducted by Statista indicate that price-sensitive purchasing is on the rise worldwide, yet it also reveals the effect of shopping in small amounts on the general spending patterns.

That is, being less expensive does not necessarily mean being more efficient but in some situations, may result in increased expenditure.

When This Type of Platform Makes Sense.

In my case, it is possible to use a low-cost platform such as this in case of the following reasons:

  • Purchasing non-essential/ experimental goods.
  • Probing options prior to engaging in high-pricing products.
  • Adhering to a well-established budget.

However, there are also cases when it is not so sensible:

  • When there is a need for quality and durability.
  • When timing matters
  • When consistency is required in products.

The platform is not necessarily good or bad but it all depends on its usage.

Conclusions: A Test Worth Trying, Not Believing.

This test was not concerning whether the platform was good or bad. It was concerning the way cheapness of shopping is incorporated in real monetary determination.

What I learned:

  • The low prices will decrease financial risk per item, but behavioral risk.
  • The value is so much based on expectations and use.
  • Platform choice is less important as compared to budget discipline.
  • Would I use it again? Probably, with definite boundaries and with reasonable expectations.

The largest lesson was not on the platform but was on spending habits. Low prices do not mean that it is easy to get deals. It’s knowing when not to buy.

Conclusion

The experiment of using a supermarket with a specific budget and attempting to use it on a low-cost shopping platform proved to be not so much about the items but rather a matter of financial consciousness. It underscored the fact that it is very easily confused between value and affordability.

Ultimately, a basic idea was supported by the experiment:

Smart spending is not about spending less, it is about spending what you really need, without avoiding spending that you actually need.
