Gearbox has revealed the release date for the first major story expansion for Borderlands 4, giving players a clearer look at when the next wave of content will arrive.
The upcoming DLC, titled Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, will launch on March 26, 2026, delivering a full campaign expansion alongside a new playable Vault Hunter, a brand new region to explore, additional bosses, and rare loot tiers.
The expansion marks the first large story driven DLC since the game launched in September 2025 and represents a significant step in the title’s post launch roadmap.
Story Pack 1 Overview
The new DLC centers around a storyline involving Ellie and a mysterious Vault connected to a dangerous frozen region known as the Whispering Glacier. Players will embark on a fresh campaign that includes new missions, new enemies, and challenging boss encounters.

New Vault Hunter: C4SH
One of the biggest additions in Story Pack 1 is the introduction of a brand new playable Vault Hunter named C4SH.
C4SH is designed as a high mobility combat specialist built around explosive abilities and fast paced engagements. While full details on the character’s skill trees have not yet been revealed, Gearbox has confirmed that the new Vault Hunter will be fully playable across the entire game, not just within the DLC campaign.
That means players who purchase the expansion will be able to start a new playthrough with C4SH or bring the character into the base game’s missions and endgame activities.

New Zone: Whispering Glacier
The Story Pack also introduces an entirely new region known as Whispering Glacier, a frozen environment filled with dangerous enemies and hidden secrets.
The icy zone features towering glaciers, frozen caverns, and abandoned industrial structures scattered across the landscape. According to early details, the area will feature several unique enemy types that are adapted to the harsh environment.
Whispering Glacier serves as the primary setting for the new story campaign and will include exploration focused missions, combat encounters, and new bosses tied to the Vault hidden within the region.
Shared Progression Feature Arrives With the DLC
Alongside the story expansion, the update will introduce shared progression, a feature requested by many players since the game’s launch.
This system allows certain types of progress to carry across characters on the same account.
Shared elements include:
- Map exploration progress
- SDU upgrade tokens
- Hover Drives
- Cosmetic unlocks
- Activity progression
The goal is to make it easier for players to switch between Vault Hunters without having to repeat large portions of the game.
Cross platform save functionality is expected in a later update but will not arrive with Story Pack 1.
