Guwahati, April 1: In a dramatic turn of events, AIUDF’s second-in-command Aminul Islam has joined the Congress in the presence of senior leader Jitendra Singh, marking yet another swift shift in his political allegiance.
Islam had recently resigned from the All India United Democratic Front and was expected to join the Asom Gana Parishad. In the days that followed, he briefly aligned with the National People’s Party and even filed his nomination under its banner, before ultimately switching to the Congress.
The Mankachar MLA, often labelled a “Paltu Ram” politician by observers for his frequent party changes, has had a turbulent association with the AIUDF, led by Badruddin Ajmal.
Sources indicate that his growing dissatisfaction with the party’s functioning played a key role in his decision to quit. He had earlier also been expelled from the AIUDF for six years, effectively severing ties with the party.
Following his induction into the Congress, Islam said in a Facebook post that he held a “fruitful and cordial” meeting with Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh, and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. He described the discussions as significant for the development of Mankachar and expressed hope that they would mark the beginning of a “new journey full of possibilities.”
Party insiders said Islam remains an influential leader with considerable grassroots support, and his exit is expected to deal a blow to the AIUDF ahead of the elections.
