Guwahati, Mar 26: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday took a swipe at Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, claiming that the latter is contesting elections “so that he can get married.”
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said, “Lurinjyoti Gogoi is contesting elections so that he can get married. He has no aim of serving the people. His only agenda is marriage. If he wins, he will get married.”
Continuing his attack, the Chief Minister added, “Whether he will win or not, I don’t know. What is his manifesto? He is getting old and wants to get married. If he doesn’t become an MLA, no one will marry him. So he is asking people to vote for him to fulfil that wish.”

Sarma’s remarks come as political rhetoric sharpens in Assam following the announcement of poll dates.
Gogoi is contesting from the Khowang constituency, which has a sizeable Ahom voter base. In the 2021 Assembly elections, he had contested from both Duliajan and Naharkatia but lost in both constituencies.
In Khowang, Gogoi is set to face two-time BJP MLA Chakradhar Gogoi.
“There will be a direct contest between the BJP and AJP in Khowang. Lurinjyoti Gogoi has been campaigning hard, while Chakradhar Gogoi has also intensified outreach in rural areas. There are some issues against the incumbent MLA, but it remains to be seen how effectively the opposition raises them during campaign meetings,” said local resident Amrit Hazarika.
