Guwahati, April 4: Renowned Northeast footballer Gilbertson Sangma, fondly known as the “Man with the Golden Boot,” passed away at his Guwahati residence on April 4 at the age of 71. A towering figure in Assam football, Sangma represented the state in the Santosh Trophy and starred for the Assam Police team, helping them win prestigious titles including the Bordoloi Trophy.
Honoured with the Assam Saurabh award in 2022, he also represented India in international friendlies in the 1970s. His death marks the loss of a football icon whose influence extended across the Northeast, inspiring players in both Assam and Meghalaya.
