Shillong, April 12: The Centre has lauded Meghalaya’s pace of development, with Secretary of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), Sanjay Jaju, reviewing key projects and noting that the state has achieved near-total utilisation of central allocations across multiple schemes.
During a two-day visit, Jaju held a high-level review meeting at the Meghalaya Secretariat on April 11 with the Chief Secretary and senior officials, focusing on accelerating project execution and strengthening Centre–State coordination.
A major thrust of the review was on projects under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE), which is driving several flagship infrastructure and tourism initiatives. These include a four-lane road in New Shillong Township and an IT Park in Tura, alongside tourism projects such as the Shillong Peak ropeway and a skywalk at Mawkdok.
The Sohra Tourism Circuit emerged as a key highlight, with multiple projects underway to boost visitor infrastructure and preserve heritage. These include the Khasi Heritage Experiential Centre at Saitsohpen and upgrades at major attractions like Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave and Wahkaliar Canyon.

Under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), Meghalaya is also advancing critical road and social infrastructure. Key works include water supply projects for Tura and Baghmara, road upgrades from Chokpot to Kharukol, and major bridges over the Myntdu and Umngot rivers.
Praising the progress, Jaju described the pace of development in the Northeast as “heartwarming,” citing visible improvements in road connectivity, public infrastructure, and economic activity. Drawing on his experience with the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, he noted significant gains in project execution and infrastructure expansion across the region.
He also highlighted emerging opportunities in sectors such as logistics, bamboo, and turmeric, while acknowledging challenges like land availability for industrial projects.
Expressing optimism, Jaju said the Northeast is well-positioned to achieve sustained growth over the next two years, provided the current momentum and leadership support continue.
