Agartala, April 12: Polling for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections concluded on a largely peaceful note on Sunday, with TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma hailing voter participation as “exceptional” and reflective of strong democratic awareness.
Addressing reporters after voting ended, Debbarma said turnout was expected to cross 80 per cent, with some areas—particularly rural and ADC regions—likely nearing the 90 per cent mark despite adverse weather conditions.
He thanked voters across age groups, including youth, women, and senior citizens, for turning out in large numbers, and credited the administration, police, and election officials for ensuring a smooth and orderly polling process. Debbarma said he remained in constant touch with authorities throughout the day and noted the absence of any major disruptions.
Striking a conciliatory tone, the TIPRA Motha chief urged political parties and stakeholders to move beyond divisions and reject what he described as a legacy of politically driven violence. Emphasising the need for stability and social harmony, he said the focus must now shift toward development and safeguarding fundamental rights.
“Elections are temporary, but the damage caused by violence is lasting,” he said, calling for unity and coexistence beyond ideological differences.
In a key demand, Debbarma urged the Centre to extend a special financial package to Tripura, citing its strategic location along the Bangladesh border. Drawing a comparison with Arunachal Pradesh—which receives enhanced central assistance due to its proximity to China—he argued that Tripura deserves similar consideration.
Highlighting challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and border vulnerabilities, he called for a united political push to secure greater central funding, particularly for ADC areas.
With the state now awaiting the electoral verdict, Debbarma emphasised the need to prioritise governance and long-term development, especially for Tripura’s youth, advocating a more cohesive and forward-looking approach to the state’s growth.
