Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has promised financial assistance to take up all basic infrastructure for the government agriculture college in Athani in Belagavi district. The college will be started in coming years.
It will be the fourth agriculture college in Kittur Karnataka region. The other colleges are in Dharwad, Vijayapura and Ranebennur in Haveri district. Athani, that lies at the eastern end of the district head quarter town of Belagavi at 140 kilometres, is expected to benefit students from Bagalkot and Vijayapura, other than Belagavi.
The agriculture college in Athani will come up in the campus of the government veterinary college in Athani. The Bahurao Deshpande Veterinary college in Kokatnur village lies on 211 acres of land.
The farm college campus was planned keeping in mind an agriculture college and veterinary college. The land acquisition for the agriculture college is complete.
In a departure from the long standing policy, the state government, allowed education societies to start private agriculture colleges. In the first round, Belagavi based KLE society and Vijayapura based BLDE have obtained permits to run private agriculture colleges. The colleges are expected to admit students from this year.
