Jirania (West Tripura), April 11: Polling teams were dispatched across Tripura on Saturday under a massive security cover for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, marking the final phase of preparations ahead of polling on April 12.
From early morning, presiding officers and polling personnel moved out from distribution centres in phased convoys, carrying Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), VVPATs, ballot units, control units and other essential materials to their designated polling stations, including those in remote and sensitive locations. Counting of votes will be held on April 17.
The TTAADC, which governs nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical area and represents a significant tribal population, remains politically crucial. A total of 9,62,697 voters, including 4,80,666 women, are eligible to cast their votes.
The BJP’s tribal allies—Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT)—are contesting separately after failing to reach a pre-poll alliance, adding complexity to the electoral battle.
Election authorities said the deployment is being carried out under strict supervision to ensure the smooth and secure conduct of polling across the TTAADC region.

A robust multi-layered security arrangement has been put in place, with 24 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)—around 1,500 personnel—deployed to escort polling teams and guard sensitive areas. This includes 12 companies of the BSF, 10 of the SSB and two companies of the CRPF. In addition, nearly 12,000 personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and state police have been mobilised to maintain law and order.
Out of 1,257 polling stations, authorities have classified 311 as highly critical, 693 as vulnerable and 253 as normal, prompting heightened surveillance across the council areas.
The elections to the 28-member TTAADC are set to witness a high-stakes, multi-cornered contest with 173 candidates in the fray. The BJP, TMP and the Left Front are contesting all 28 seats, while the Congress has fielded candidates in 27 seats and the IPFT in 24. Besides, 38 Independent candidates and nominees from smaller parties are also in the race.
