SHILLONG, MAR 28: The Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs on Saturday rejected claims of a domestic LPG shortage, saying 22,094 cylinders were supplied between March 25 and 27 and daily deliveries have returned to 7,300–7,400 — comparable to pre-crisis levels.
“There is no issue with domestic LPG supply in the State at present,” the Directorate said, adding that distribution is being monitored daily by state and district committees in coordination with oil marketing companies.
A temporary disruption around March 20 followed policy tweaks, e-KYC rollout, distributor hesitation and misinformation that triggered panic bookings, officials noted, but conditions improved after March 24 as logistics scaled up to 30 truckloads a day.
Commercial LPG remains capped per Ministry of Petroleum guidelines, with the state government seeking an upward revision given Meghalaya’s reliance on tourism, lack of piped gas and hilly terrain.
Average commercial supply is now 190–200 cylinders per day, prioritised for essential sectors.
Chief Secretary–led meetings on March 27 reviewed long-term options including the IGGL pipeline network.
Inspectors are conducting daily checks, with reports sent to the central ministry and penalties warned for hoarding or overcharging.
Following an inquiry around Jail Road, Sunny Indane Gas Agency was instructed to stick to doorstep delivery after crowding was partly traced to consumers opting for self-collection.
The Directorate asked the public not to panic or stockpile, urged media to avoid unverified claims, and shared helplines (toll-free 1967; WhatsApp 9402327737) for assistance.
