Resubelpara, March 4: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday announced a series of initiatives — including a museum, a book, and a documentary film — to honour the life and legacy of Late P. A. Sangma.
The announcement was made during the “Our Magnificent Meghalaya – Vision 2032” programme held at the Mini Stadium in Resubelpara to mark eight years of the MDA Government.
Describing the occasion as a moment of remembrance, the Chief Minister said that even a decade after his passing, the ideals and vision of P. A. Sangma continue to guide the state’s governance and development journey.
“Late P. A. Sangma is still in our midst through his vision, principles and ideals that continue to inspire our policies and governance,” he said.

Sangma noted that the former Lok Sabha Speaker played a crucial role in giving a strong voice to the North East in national politics, serving both as a Member of Parliament and as a respected national leader.
To preserve and showcase his contributions for future generations, the state government will establish a museum dedicated to his life, alongside publishing a book and producing a documentary film highlighting his journey and achievements.
“These initiatives will celebrate his life and contributions while ensuring that his ideals continue to inspire generations to come,” the Chief Minister added.
Purno Agitok Sangma, a towering political figure from Meghalaya, served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament and held several key positions at the national level, including Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He was widely regarded as one of the most influential leaders from the North East in Indian politics.
During the programme, the Chief Minister also reaffirmed Meghalaya’s long-term development roadmap under Vision 2032, while relaunching the Focus+ scheme and distributing benefits under the Green Meghalaya initiative.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma said Meghalaya is currently the second fastest-growing economy in the country after Tamil Nadu, but stressed that economic progress must translate into tangible benefits for people at the grassroots.
“Development cannot be measured only in numbers. It must be holistic and must reach the last person,” he said.
Announcing the relaunch of the Focus+ registration drive, Sangma said 2,000 new beneficiaries would receive support under the scheme, and fresh registrations would begin immediately. The programme provides direct financial assistance to households engaged in agri-value chain activities.
Tourism and Agriculture Minister Timothy D. Shira described Focus+ as a transformative initiative that strengthens farmers’ livelihoods and improves rural incomes. He also highlighted the importance of the Green Meghalaya initiative in restoring forest cover and addressing environmental degradation.

Reflecting on environmental changes in the region, Shira said areas around Resubelpara were once densely forested but have seen significant depletion due to jhum cultivation and settlement expansion. He also expressed concern over declining water levels in the Damring River, attributing it to climate change and human activities.
Earlier, North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Dr Abhishek Saini said the programme aligns with the government’s vision of transforming Meghalaya into a $10-billion economy by strengthening key sectors such as agriculture, tourism and entrepreneurship.
He noted that the Focus+ scheme provides a ₹5,000 direct benefit transfer per household to support activities such as piggery, ginger cultivation, spices and aromatics. Under the Green Meghalaya Plus initiative, landholders can receive incentives of up to ₹20,000 per hectare annually through a Payment for Ecosystem Services model.
Currently, the Green Meghalaya programme covers 50,000 hectares, with plans to expand by another 50,000 hectares to strengthen climate resilience and community-led forest management across the state.
During the event, cheques were distributed to beneficiaries under both schemes, reflecting the government’s emphasis on direct benefit transfer and grassroots empowerment.
The programme was attended by public representatives, senior officials, community leaders and residents from across North Garo Hills, and also featured a cultural performance by students of Pascal School.
