Tura, Mar 11: Social activist Cherian G. Momin has appealed to residents of the Garo Hills to maintain peace and restraint following incidents of unrest that have created fear and tension among the public.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Momin expressed deep concern over the violence reported from parts of Garo Hills and urged citizens to act responsibly during the current volatile situation.
“At a time when emotions are high, it is essential that all citizens act with responsibility, restraint, and a commitment to preserving peace and communal harmony,” he said.
Momin’s appeal comes after the Meghalaya Governor, through the District Council Affairs Department, officially notified the postponement of the General Election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) until further orders. The decision was taken in view of the prevailing law and order situation in the region.
He said the postponement reflects the seriousness of the situation and the need to restore normalcy before democratic processes can proceed peacefully.
Calling for calm, Momin urged all sections of society—including community leaders, youth organisations, civil society groups and the general public—to refrain from any acts of violence, vandalism, intimidation or disruption of essential public services.
“Reports of assaults, destruction of property and attempts to disrupt emergency services are deeply troubling and must be unequivocally condemned,” he stated.
According to him, violence carried out in the name of any cause only weakens the legitimacy of genuine grievances and undermines democratic values.
“The people of Meghalaya have always been known for their spirit of peaceful coexistence, respect for the rule of law and commitment to dialogue in resolving differences,” he added.
Momin also urged citizens to exercise caution while using social media and public platforms, warning that rumours and misinformation could further inflame tensions in the region.
“The spread of rumours, misinformation or inflammatory statements can easily deepen divisions between communities. Responsible communication and reliance on verified information are essential to maintaining public trust and stability,” he said.
He further appealed to the administration and law enforcement authorities to take firm and impartial action to ensure the safety and security of citizens and prevent any further escalation of violence.
“Protecting human life and restoring public confidence must remain the highest priority,” he said.
Stressing that the future of Garo Hills depends on unity and mutual respect, Momin called on people to reject violence and work collectively to restore normalcy in the region.
“No political or social issue should be allowed to divide our people or destroy the harmony that has long been the strength of our land,” he said.
