Shillong, Mar 23: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui drew a clear line between two strands of the 2009 assistant‑teacher recruitment saga, saying teachers declared “tainted” by the High Court must still be terminated even though criminal proceedings against former officials have been quashed.
“These are two separate issues,” Rymbui told reporters. “The court declared some teachers during that recruitment as tainted and those teachers have to be terminated — that stand as of now.”
On September 4, 2025, the Meghalaya High Court had quashed charges against former Education Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, former Director of Elementary and Mass Education JD Sangma, and former Deputy Director Ameka I Lyngdoh in connection with the alleged irregularities in the lower primary school assistant teacher recruitment process.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered a case in 2018 based on an FIR lodged in 2011, alleging that the accused had conspired to manipulate score sheets and favor certain candidates.
The selection process was concerned with five centres or Sub -Divisions: Shillong, Jowai, Amlarem, Tura and Dadenggre.
“Regarding the other case… the High Court has quashed the criminal case against them. These are two different things,” Rymbui said.
“As of now, the issue regarding termination of those teachers stands because that has been done as per the court’s judgment,” he added.
