Nearly 7.5 million Americans rely on Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, each month to help cover the essentials. But in March, recipients may notice something different about their payment — namely, that it didn’t arrive as it typically does.
SSI is a Social Security program that provides monthly support to low-income Americans who are blind or disabled, as well as adults 65 and older with limited resources. Because the first of the month fell on a Sunday, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issued March benefits early — on Friday, Feb. 27, instead. While the timing shift can be confusing, it’s simply a quirk in the payment calendar, not a missing check.
When did SSI checks for March 2026 go out?
SSI payments typically go out on the first day of the month, but when the first of the month falls on either a weekend or a federal holiday, the SSA shifts the payment day to the previous business day. It’s not an unusual situation. SSI recipients received their February SSI check on Friday, Jan. 30, because Feb. 1 fell on a Sunday. And January’s SSI check arrived on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025, to account for New Year’s Day.
This month, March payments were sent out on Feb. 27, as March 1 fell on a Sunday. That said, there will be no SSI payment issued in March — if you are eligible to get one, you should have received it already.
The next SSI check will go out on April 1.
The Social Security payment schedule for March
People who receive both SSI and Social Security benefits — or who started collecting Social Security before May 1997 — will get their Social Security payments on Tuesday, March 3, following the SSA’s standard schedule.
All other Social Security recipients will be paid in March according to the usual schedule based on birth date. If your birthday is between the first and the 10th of the month, your check will come on March 11. If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th, your check will come on March 18. And if your birthday is between the 21st and 31st, your check will arrive on March 25.
Months in 2026 without SSI payments
Here’s how the SSI payment schedule plays out for the rest of 2026 and early 2027, according to the SSA’s benefit payments calendar:
- Feb. 27, 2026: Early payment for March (March 1 fell on a Sunday)
- April 1, 2026: Regular payment for April
- May 1, 2026: Regular payment for May
- June 1, 2026: Regular payment for June
- July 1, 2026: Regular payment for July
- July 31, 2026: Early payment for August (Aug. 1 falls on a Saturday)
- Sept. 1, 2026: Regular payment for September
- Oct. 1, 2026: Regular payment for October
- Oct. 30, 2026: Early payment for November (Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday)
- Dec. 1, 2026: Regular payment for December
- Dec. 31, 2026: Early payment for January 2027 (due to New Year’s Day)
March, August and November won’t have standalone SSI payments this year to account for weekends and holidays. Recipients will receive their benefits at the end of the previous month, as noted in the payment schedule above.
