Facing rising demand and aggressive load growth projections, utilities are also contending with new regulatory burdens and net zero expectations. When seeking to address these issues, a European utilities firm leveraged a complex divestment strategy to strengthen its business – with experts from Lancia Consult partnering with the business to redesign its operating model accordingly.
At the start of the divestment project, the utilities organisation’s leadership realised they had a rare chance to address long-term issues in the company’s legacy processes. These included blurred lines of responsibility, limited cross-team collaboration and siloing, which were hindering the firm’s efficiency, and ability to grow.
After making contact, Lancia Consult set about a dedicated discovery project, to help better understand the issues and opportunities at play. The team met a broad range of staff from the client, as well as leaders across each of its departments. Together, they identified pain points, mapped future processes, and clarified roles and priorities.
This exploratory process helped Lancia Consult’s experts to develop a revamped organisational model, spread across people, roles, processes, ways of working, governance and data. What then followed was a practical and phased implementation, supported by the consultants, with “a strong emphasis on ownership, collaboration, and data-driven decision making.”
According to a release from the consultancy, the client has seen a range of benefits from the project. For one, the utilities player now has a “clear roadmap for operational excellence and cost savings”. Team visibility, ownership, and collaboration have all improved, Lancia Consult adds.
Reflecting on the project, the experts conclude, “Most importantly, the business is now better positioned to deliver outstanding customer service and support future growth. The discovery phase has laid the foundation for ongoing improvement and a more agile, customer-focused organisation.”
