During a recent Q&A session, World of Warcraft’s Holly Longdale posed the open question of how many players would be interested in playing the game with a dedicated controller-based UI. This was, to be clear, the question in its entirety – no talk of console ports or future plans, no discussion of ability changes, just a question about a controller-based UI option. Naturally, people had opinions on the matter on Reddit, many of which bemoaned the inevitable changes to abilities and rebalancing coming from the game having a controller interface and being ported to consoles.
While Reddit is difficult to gauge an absolute consensus from, the general tone skews negative, although many posters both note that using controllers can be a boon for many players and it is worth noting that the game’s combat assistant already allows players to reduce their rotation down to a single button. Many players also see an eventual console port as an inevitability, given that Microsoft owns Blizzard and would likely be keen to have the game on the next generation of Xbox. Regardless, the question at this time was not about anything beyond controller interfaces, a possibility that is worth thinking about for the future.
