Over 100 days ago, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy attended a pre-Christmas celebrations organised by the State Government, where he announced plans to introduce legislation on hate speech on the lines of a law enacted by Karnataka to punish those who insult other religions.

Keeping his word, the Chief Minister ensured that on March 30, 2026, in the midst of the Budget Session of the State Legislature, the Telangana Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Assembly by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar. While the intent of the Government was to ensure respect for all faiths and strictly deal with attempts to disrupt communal harmony, the operative portions of the Bill sparked intense debate.
