Elder Scrolls Online’s Season Zero is technically open, but it doesn’t really get its pièce de resistance until the Night Market launches at the very end of April. And in case you’re still wondering why and what’s in it, ZeniMax Online Studios now has a detailed dev blog explaining both of those things.
First off, it’s only thematically a market – it’s not just another cash shop or awards system. It’s actually a zone in Fargrave that players enter to explore and plunder, either solo or in groups, with or without the assistance and permission of the three factions that run it: the Ruckus, the Thousand Eyes, and the Glittering Goad. Of course, to actually complete the zone’s main quest, you’ll want to chat with the Curator – that’s the Game of Thrones Night King-lookalike dude on all the promo materials – and join up with one of the core factions to fight, puzzle, quest, and race your way through the districts.
From there, the zone operates, well, exactly like an old-school MMORPG dungeon. “It’s similar to the challenge of a dungeon, but unlike a dungeon, it’s not just your group fighting to survive and collect loot. So, imagine running a dungeon and being able to high-five another group as they pass by,” says ESO’s lead dungeon designer Shane Slama. We can imagine it, of course, because open dungeons is how MMORPGs operated for many years, and indeed many still operate that way. Camp check!
Worth a second look is that the Night Market includes a sweet new house for players to earn. Gorgeous.
While technically the Night Market runs from April 29th to June 17th and will close, the studio has previously said – multiple times now – that there’s a very good chance it’ll come back around again if player sentiment about it is good.
