Sephiroth is going to sound different in Final Fantasy VII Revelation. That’s because the final game in Square Enix’s remake trilogy will be changing the actor playing its big final boss. Tyler Hoechlin, who voiced the One-Winged Angel in both Remake and Rebirth, was unavailable during the production of the third game, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi.

When Revelation was revealed at Summer Game Fest, some fans immediately realized that Sephiroth’s English VA sounded off. While some wondered if it was just a weird dubbing issue, Hamaguchi later confirmed in an interview with Twitch streamer Maximilian Dood that Hoechlin will not be voicing the iconic antagonist in the final game due to apparent scheduling conflicts. The developer didn’t elaborate much beyond that.

Instead, voice actor Travis Willingham will be taking over the role of Sephiroth for the English VA in Revelation. Willingham currently voices Thor and Doctor Doom in Marvel Rivals. He was also Aced in Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts series, and has voiced a bunch of English anime dubs, including Full Metal Alchemist (Roy Mustang) and One Piece (Portgas D. Ace).

This has left some fans disappointed at the late stage change. “So yeah, I am heart broken to say Sephiroth has a new Eng VA, one wrote. “Man, what a bummer…I was looking forward to his performance & Morikawa’s.” It’s also led to a fair bit of confusion, with many pointing out that Hoechlin has been on the convention circuit continuing to promote his role in the games. “Tyler Hoechlin is not employed enough to not be available for this,” joked another user on X.

Not everyone was a fan of Hoechlin’s take on Sephiroth, which some considered too cool, disinterested, and quiet. For them, a new voice actor is a chance to see a new spin on the character before the trilogy closes out. Unlike Hoechlin, who does a lot of screen acting, Willingham is primarily a voice actor. I can’t say it will matter much to me either way. I played the first two games with subtitles and will probably stick with that for Revelation
