Gangtok, April 17:A massive show of support for the Women’s Reservation Bill unfolded in Sikkim’s capital on Friday, with over 10,000 women rallying across Gangtok, even as Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed disappointment over the Bill failing to pass in the Lok Sabha.

The rally, which began at Deorali Truck Stand and culminated at Paljor Stadium, saw participation from women across the state—joined by legislators and members of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly—carrying the national flag and voicing support for greater political representation.

Terming the development a “setback to the aspirations of millions,” Tamang said he was “deeply disheartened” that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam could not secure passage despite widespread public support. He accused the Opposition of engaging in “ruthless politics” and deliberately stalling the legislation over concerns about political credit.

“Such a transformative opportunity has been stalled due to political considerations. This is not just a missed opportunity—it is a setback to the dreams of countless women,” the Chief Minister said, warning that those opposing the Bill would “face the wrath of women across the country.”

Highlighting the scale of public mobilisation, Tamang noted that women across Sikkim—“mothers, sisters, and daughters”—had come together in solidarity, reflecting a growing demand for equality, dignity, and representation in governance.

Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa said the ongoing parliamentary discussions around the legislation remain significant, referring to recent deliberations on its implementation. Meanwhile, MLA Pamin Lepcha expressed optimism that the Bill—passed earlier—would be enforced following the completion of the Census.

Despite the current legislative hurdle, Tamang asserted that the movement for women’s political empowerment would continue, stating that “the voice of women cannot be suppressed” and will remain central to shaping a more inclusive India.
