SHILLONG, MAY 1: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday stepped out of his convoy to meet members of the Meghalaya Vocational Teachers Union (MVTU) who were staging a placard protest outside an honouring ceremony event, and assured them he would extend help “within the limits” on their demand for a new pay structure.
The union held the demonstration outside Students’ Field, Jaiaw, where an honouring ceremony organised by the Meghalaya SSA Schools Association and Meghalaya 4th Teachers Association was underway.
The event was held to recognise the state government’s introduction of a structured pay framework aimed at enhancing service protection and financial stability for SSA and 4th teachers in Meghalaya.
On noticing the protesters, the Chief Minister halted his convoy and got down to speak with them.
He assured them saying, ‘I will try to help as much as possible whatever is within the limits. I will do my best.”
The teachers thanked and appreciated the Chief Minister’s gesture and assurance.
Earlier, MVTU president Aibansuk Suchiang said vocational teachers were left out of the new pay structure announced for other categories.
“As you know that the chief minister is going to release the new pay structure of teachers but sadly us the vocational teachers are not included. We feel neglected,” Suchiang said.
“That is why we decided to come out to the street and display placards as we too we want the government to include the vocational teachers under the new pay structure,” she added.
Suchiang said the demand had been pending for years.
“As you know the vocational education was started since 2017 and till now are yet to get any increment or new pay structure or job policy,” she said.
“We have put forward this demand since 2019 but till today nothing has been done to address our issue despite submitting our memorandums at the minister and chief minister’s level highlighting our demand for job security and new pay structure being implemented for other teachers,” she added.
The union pointed to their workload and pay disparity.
“The vocational teachers are taking classes from IX to XII, which means for both secondary and higher secondary but despite this, our pay is meagre,” Suchiang said.
“We feel that we have the right to get new pay structure to ensure equal pay for equal work,” she said.
“Therefore, we have decided to stage this peaceful demonstration outside the Students’ Field at Jaiaw, where the chief minister is addressing the teachers on the new pay structure today,” Suchiang added.
