Guwahati, May 5: Assam’s election results have put the spotlight on dynastic politics in the state, with three sons of former chief ministers losing their constituencies in contests marked by significant margins.
In Jorhat, Gaurav Gogoi, son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, was defeated by BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami by over 23,000 votes.
The result is being seen as a key setback for the Congress in Upper Assam.
Nazira, long associated with the Saikia family, also saw a shift. Debabrata Saikia, son of former chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, lost the seat he had held since 2011. He was defeated by BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain by a margin of over 40,000 votes.

In Barkhetri, Diganta Barman, son of former chief minister Bhumidhar Barman, was defeated by BJP’s Narayan Deka by more than 80,000 votes, one of the larger margins in this election.
These outcomes come amid a broader surge by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has secured a strong mandate across Assam. The scale and spread of the results suggest a wider shift in how voters are responding to candidates, beyond traditional political associations.
Political observers say the verdict does not necessarily signal the end of dynastic politics, but it does indicate that electoral success is increasingly tied to factors such as local engagement, visibility and delivery.
Reacting to the results, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said there was “nothing good to feel in someone’s loss,” while noting that the outcome reflects the choice made by voters.
The results, taken together, point to a moment of reassessment for established political families in Assam, as the state’s electoral landscape continues to evolve.
