Hahim, May 7: In a unique example of community initiative, residents of ten villages along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Kamrup district have come together to build a concrete bridge at Hahim using their own contributions after years of alleged government neglect.
For decades, nearly 500 families depended on a fragile bamboo bridge for daily movement. More than 200 students, along with office-goers and villagers, crossed the makeshift structure every day, often risking their safety, residents said.
According to villagers, repeated written appeals submitted to various government departments since 2021 failed to bring any official response or support for a permanent bridge.
Left with little choice, the community decided to act on its own. Families pooled their savings and collectively began construction of a concrete bridge to ensure safer and more reliable connectivity for the border villages.
Residents said the bridge is not just an infrastructure project but a symbol of collective determination and self-reliance in a region long affected by poor connectivity.
The villagers have also appealed to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to extend support to the initiative, expressing hope that their efforts will finally draw attention to the long-pending infrastructural needs of the border area.
