Gross direct premium underwritten by non-life insurers rose 8.28 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 36,417.67 crore in April 2026, led by growth across segments.

According to data from the General Insurance Council, general insurers reported a 5.70 per cent YoY rise in premium to Rs 32,349.2 crore. Standalone health insurance companies recorded a 34.53 per cent YoY increase in premium to Rs 3,945.52 crore, while specialised insurers saw premium growth of 31.58 per cent to Rs 122.95 crore during the month.

The country’s largest general insurer, New India Assurance, reported a 0.97 per cent YoY increase in premiums to Rs 6,084.96 crore.

Among private general insurers, ICICI Lombard posted a 1.72 per cent YoY rise in premium to Rs 3,654.01 crore.

Among other major players, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance reported a 10.93 per cent YoY growth in premiums to Rs 2,665.55 crore. Oriental Insurance Company saw a 1.54 per cent YoY increase in premiums to Rs 2,670.25 crore, while United India Insurance Company reported a 1.15 per cent YoY rise in premiums to Rs 2,117.24 crore. National Insurance Company recorded a 5 per cent YoY growth in premium to Rs 1,605.18 crore during the month.

However, premium growth for general insurance companies slowed from the 13.91 per cent YoY growth recorded in April 2025 owing to softer reinsurance renewals on April 1, 2026, according to experts. The April 1 reinsurance renewals in India saw a nearly 75-80 per cent drop in premiums in corporate renewals due to better loss ratios and higher capacity.

Among standalone health insurers, Star Health and Allied Insurance reported a 19.28 per cent YoY growth in premiums to Rs 1,264.54 crore. Care Health Insurance posted a 39.24 per cent YoY rise in premium to Rs 1,008.77 crore, while Niva Bupa Health Insurance saw premium growth of 30.26 per cent YoY to Rs 629.26 crore.

Standalone health insurers had recorded 9.50 per cent growth in April 2025 and reported stronger growth in April 2026.
