SHILLONG, MAY 11: Indigenous knowledge and sustainable practices can be the foundation for globally relevant startups, NEHU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. S Umdor said on Monday while addressing the inauguration of the Innovation, Design and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp 2026 at North-Eastern Hill University.
Speaking as chief guest, Prof Umdor urged the more than 170 participants to look to their immediate surroundings for entrepreneurial ideas.
He cited Khasi Ryndia, the traditional silk produced without harming silkworms, as an example of how local practices embody sustainability.
“Referring to Khasi Ryndia, the traditional silk produced without harming silkworms, he highlighted how sustainability and indigenous practices can inspire globally relevant entrepreneurial ventures.
Prof. Umdor encouraged students to “draw inspiration from their immediate surroundings and local culture,” stressing that Meghalaya’s traditions hold lessons in ecological balance that align with modern startup values.
The IDE Bootcamp 2026, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell and AICTE, opened with the lighting of the lamp and Saraswati Vandana. The five-day event brings together students, entrepreneurs, and resource persons from across the state for hands-on exposure to the startup ecosystem.
Earlier, Prof. Dinesh Bhatia, Coordinator of the bootcamp, spoke on India’s post-COVID entrepreneurial shift and the need to “innovate fearlessly for building a self-reliant nation.”
Guest speakers Vikas Verma and RajKiran Pund also engaged participants on digital disruption and pitching skills.
An exhibition of handmade crafts, herbal teas, sustainable jewellery, local wines, and other regional products by students and artisans ran alongside the inaugural session, reflecting what Prof. Umdor described as the link between “innovation, local culture, and sustainability.”
Dr. Suktilang Majaw closed the ceremony with a Vote of Thanks to dignitaries, faculty, and participants for their role in the programme.
