Update #2 []: Obsidian is issuing free download codes for The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition to those who contact the developer if they bought the base PS4 game off the back of news they’d be getting a free PS5 upgrade.
Members of the game’s subreddit are posting email communication from the developer, after they’ve shared proof of their purchase. In response, Obsidian is providing free PS5 upgrade codes so owners can finally claim what they thought they were getting all along.
“We want to make sure this is handled properly for you, so we’ve gone ahead and provided a redeemable code that will grant you access to the upgraded version directly,” an email posted to the subreddit explains.
Update #1 []:
The official Obsidian Support social media account has now issued a statement on the change in approach to the developer’s promised “free” PS5 upgrade for base game owners of The Outer Worlds.
While it intended to provide the upgrade free of charge, some “entitlement restrictions and backend issues” got in the way, to where it wasn’t as smooth as Obsidian would like. It recognises its playerbase is now “rightfully, upset”.
If you bought The Outer Worlds between 30th April 2026 and 27th May 2026, then it’s asking you to contact the Obsidian support page to “work with you to make it right. Sorry again for the frustration around this.”
Obsidian concludes in the statement that it still can’t provide the free PS4 to PS5 upgrade it announced a month ago. “Due to how entitlements work on the consoles, digital owners on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will need to own the base game + DLCs or the expansion pass to be eligible for the upgrade moving forward.”
Original Story: Things can never just be simple, can they?
After developer Obsidian confirmed it’s providing free PS5 upgrades to the Spacer’s Choice Edition of The Outer Worlds for PS4 owners starting yesterday, it turns out the process isn’t nearly as straightforward as it seemed. What owners of the base PS4 and Xbox One versions were told would be free has now turned into a paid upgrade.
This is due to mixed messaging from the studio.
At the start of this month, Obsidian announced that, alongside some gameplay updates and technical tweaks, it would be delisting the base version of the RPG. However, if you owned the “base edition” before 27th May 2026, you then got the Spacer’s Choice Edition for free, which bundles the original title together with its two DLC packs on PS5.

The developer then went even further and made it crystal clear: “This is for all platforms that the Spacer’s Choice Edition is on (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG).”
Yesterday, the stated 27th May 2026 came and went without any free PS4 / Xbox One to PS5 / Xbox Series X upgrades materialising, though.
Those who bought the game in the lead-up to yesterday’s promised free upgrade have begun reaching out to Obsidian Support social media accounts, and are now being told they actually need to own the two expansions in order to qualify for the free upgrade. In the developer’s post, it quite clearly stated the “base edition” was all that was needed.
Obsidian Support has responded, citing “unforeseen platform limitations” on both PlayStation and Xbox as the reason behind the change:
Now, to qualify for the upgrade, owners of the base game on both PS4 and Xbox One would need to buy the Expansion Pass, which costs £12.99 / $14.99 on the PS Store.
From 27th May, Obsidian said in its original message that you would need to own both DLC packs to qualify for the PS5 upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition. However, if you were already an owner of the base version long before the news or bought the game in the lead-up, then you would qualify for the free PS5 upgrade.
The news post very clearly said:
If you have at least the base edition of The Outer Worlds in your digital library before May 27th, you will be receiving the Spacer’s Choice Edition free. That’s right, free! This is for all platforms that the Spacer’s Choice Edition is on (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG).
Fans have taken their complaints to social media and the game’s subreddit, which is drawing critical comments such as the following from EducationalProject36: “Obsidian made a game where greedy corporations that cheat people are ridiculed. And then they do the same, it’s so ironic…”
“So if I only have the base game I don’t get the upgrade? You guys changed your mind? I’ll go f*ck myself I guess,” said ArcticSounds20.
