Guwahati, May 31: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that his council of ministers will be expanded on June 5, paving the way for the induction of several new faces into the NDA 3.0 government in the state.

Taking to X, Sarma said, “I am pleased to inform that the Council of Ministers of the Government of Assam will be expanded on 5 June 2026.”

The cabinet expansion comes less than a month after Sarma began his second consecutive term as chief minister following the NDA’s emphatic victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Political observers see the move as a key step in shaping the new government’s regional and political balance ahead of its full-scale administrative rollout.

Sources indicated that eight to nine MLAs are likely to be inducted as cabinet ministers and ministers of state. Several first-time faces are expected to find a place in the ministry alongside experienced leaders.

“Many new faces can be seen in the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led cabinet. From Barak Valley, new faces can be inducted into the ministry. Two to three new faces from Upper Assam can also be inducted. Priority has been given to some experienced leaders, but there will also be new entrants,” a source said.

The expansion is expected to accommodate representatives from the BJP and its alliance partners while balancing regional, ethnic and political considerations across Assam.

Before the formation of the new government, Sarma had indicated that the Assam cabinet could eventually have around 18 to 19 ministers, though the final composition would be decided in consultation with the party leadership.

At present, the cabinet has only four ministers apart from the chief minister. Those sworn in earlier this month were Rameswar Teli (Transformation & Development), Atul Bora (Panchayat & Rural Development), Charan Boro (Transport) and Ajanta Neog (Women & Child Development), representing the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

Sarma took oath as chief minister for a second consecutive term on May 12 at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several senior BJP leaders.

The announcement also comes amid Sarma’s ongoing visit to New Delhi, where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday in his first formal meeting with the Prime Minister since assuming office again.

According to officials, the discussion focused on the priorities and early roadmap of the newly formed NDA 3.0 government in Assam.

He also met Ashwini Vaishnaw, where they discussed expanding the overall railway network and rail infrastructure in Assam, which includes work on the ongoing 1,300+ km of track expansion and 50+ Amrit Bharat stations.
