SHILLONG, June 6: The South West Garo Hills district administration has issued notices directing landowners and occupants to surrender land acquired for the ambitious Tura Bypass Project within 60 days, paving the way for the next phase of construction of the key highway infrastructure project.

The notice, issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner and Competent Authority for Land Acquisition (CALA), applies to land acquired for the proposed two-lane bypass connecting Gambagre village and Indikgre village.

According to the administration, the acquired land has already vested with the Central Government under the provisions of the National Highways Act, 1956, and compensation determined for affected landowners has been approved and deposited with the Competent Authority for Land Acquisition.

Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) and CALA, Kum. Anendya Raajsshre, IAS, has directed all affected landowners and persons in possession of the acquired land to hand over possession, including any structures or assets located on the land, within the stipulated period.

Officials warned that failure to comply could invite action under Section 3E(2) of the National Highways Act, which empowers authorities to take possession of acquired land.

The move marks a significant step forward for the long-pending Tura Bypass Project, which is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity to Tura and adjoining areas, and strengthen transport infrastructure in the Garo Hills region.

The district administration has appealed to affected residents and stakeholders to cooperate with the land acquisition process, stating that the project is of strategic importance for regional connectivity and economic development.
