There’s no way around it, folks: these are tough times for the industry – and, honestly, the world.
Reports claim Ubisoft is shutting its Winnipeg and Belgrade studios, while restructuring its Barcelona unit to focus on Rainbow Six. VGC says as many as 380 jobs could be lost.
There’ll also be internal changes to the company’s Global Publishing unit, which will see a reduction in roles right across the company.
This is just the latest in a series of cuts at the French publisher, as it navigates a torrid time. Recently it committed to reducing its fixed costs by €200 million (~$230 million) over the next two years. It’s already cancelled multiple games and laid off hundreds of staff this year alone.
Ubisoft’s Winnipeg studio was founded in 2018 and focused on developing proprietary technologies for its various studios to use, like the Anvil and Snowdrop engines.
Belgrade, meanwhile, opened in 2016 and contributed to a variety of different projects, including The Crew 2 and Riders Republic.
