God of War Laufey has been part of Santa Monica Studio’s plans for the series for the best part of a decade, according to a new interview with Faye actor Deborah Ann Woll.
Talking to Comic Gaming Magazine, the actor shares she’s known about God of War Laufey for almost 10 years. When head of creative Cory Barlog brought Woll in to the studio to pitch God of War Ragnarok to her, and show off the 2018 PS4 game, he already had a poster for Laufey featuring Faye and the cube, who we now know is Phranque.
In full, Woll said:
He pitched it to me in 2018, and they had known about it before then. It’s wild. Like when Corey brought me in to talk about doing Ragnarök and show me the 2018 game, he already had a poster for the Laufey game with me and a cube. A cube that’s been there since the beginning. It’s deeply a part of the lore.
It is an interesting detail that suggests the developer has always been planning for some kind of trilogy, where God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok build the story together and God of War Laufey sits alongside them, telling further tales and expanding on lore.
Woll actually touches on this: “All of the mysteries and the little hints and clues, the questions, the lingering — you know — ideas that you have from that Norse saga, we’re going to answer a lot of that, or we’re going to expand upon it. So this is going to feel like you are getting more story. This is going to continue to deepen what we’ve already learned.”
She also said “the other direction”, as in the Kratos and Atreus-fronted entries, will continue. This backs up what Barlog said upon the announcement of God of War Laufey.
“But we’re going to put a little time and focus on expanding this world and really trying to say: this is us doubling down on the world of God of War. We want this to be huge. We want you to feel like there’s such an untapped universe. And this is just the beginning of a step into some of that.”
